Urban Screen - WHAT IS UP? “A virtual site-specific theatre”
„WHAT IS UP?“ is an architectural projection on „de Pakkerij“ - a typical Dutch dwelling house in the city center of Enschede / Netherland. It was performed during the International Festival of Arts “Grenswerk” on the 25th of September 2010.
A house located in a dark street. A young man ambles along the sidewalk and returns home. He enters his own leisure area and sheltered home in order to withdraw from the outer world. In its surrealistic occurrence that space does not refer to any realistic scenario. The projection bypasses any extended borderline framing human intimacy - and gives a deep insight to our protagonist`s soul.
By means of a precise fitting projection the whole house turns into a three-dimensional vast room hosting a human being of huge proportions. The conventional physical laws appear to be repealed and strangely linked to the mental processes of the protagonist. Sudden changes of gravity or mysterious modifications of the walls take place. The house seems to have a life of its own.
The house facade thereby marks the dividing membrane between a private sphere and the public space where the audience is located. The architectural surface is staged as a boundary layer similar to human clothing - the facade acts as an interface to people’s deepest privacy. The projection screens this separating layer and provides an intimate view of the young man`s inner life to the audience.
“WHAT IS UP?” focuses on the question of how someone reacts if nothing is like it used to be. The basic Idea was to reflect upon our constructions of inside and outside. It examines the relation between defined physical boundaries of our living environment and the limits of our distinct “soul space“. Despite being challenged by extraordinary occurrences the main character deals with all unexpected effects in a playful way. He easily comes up with solutions. He dances life and simply says ‘WHAT IS UP?’.

Apparatjik: Arrow + Bow
Live performance during the opening ceremony of the new Deutsche Bank towers in Frankfurt by legendary band Apparatjik, who played from a 3 x 3 metre cube situated in the centre of the foyer, on which video images were projected on.
Founded in 2008, the names of its individual members speak for themselves: Guy Berryman is the bassist of Coldplay, Magne Furuholmen is the keyboarder and guitarist of A-ha, and Jonas Bjerre is a singer and guitarist of Danish group Mew. Completing the Apparatjik quartet is producer and songwriter Martin Terefe. -

Tomoko Sauvage - Nagi (calm)
Tomoko Sauvage has been developing her original instrument, electro-aquatic singing bowls (water, hydrophones, porcelain bowls) in performances, compositions and installations. Sauvage’s musical search with the ‘natural synthesizer’ using water and electricity has always been inspired by meteorological metaphors.

TEDGlobal: Imogen Heap’s Musical Gloves Manipulate Sound With Hand Gestures
Developed by Dr. Thomas Mitchell, a lecturer and researcher at the University of the West of England, the high tech gloves connect an interface to a live musical production system controlled entirely with hand gestures. Sounds can be recorded, synthesized and manipulated live on stage using intuitive hand movements.
Dr. Mitchell explains:
It is really exciting to launch the gestural music system at TED this summer. It takes improvisation to a new level and frees the artist from interactions with electronic equipment on stage. Imogen’s performance will not make use of any pre-recorded material – the gestures she makes will control the sounds that the TED attendees will hear. For example by making a grasping motion she can ‘catch’ the sound of her voice or any other instrument, she can then filter these sounds by clasping her hands together and then ‘release’ the sound again by opening her hands. She can build layers of music, point and play invisible synthesisers and drums. The creative possibilities are huge and it’s really engaging to watch.
Still much an ongoing research project, it will take years before it reaches store shelves, if ever. But we’ll see the video on TED in few days: http://conferences.ted.com/TEDGlobal2011/

SYNCHROPATH DVD release by SCHNITT
SYNCHROPATH is an audio/video project which explores the emotional potential of sound and video communication systems extracted from the daily life. SYNCHROPATH develops a method of composing based on the synchronism from video and audio files. The generated instruments come from several different sound and video sources. SCHNITT selects 42 audio sources and 28 video sources from which they extract 678 audio files and 234 video files. The single files will be processed, assembled and synchronized between themselves and built up the basic structure of the performance. Live Amelie Duchow and Marco Monfardini complete the project by mixing in realtime the final composition of the performance. The visual part of SYNCHROPATH will be presented with the projection of the video on two 16:9 screens and the realtime sound visualisation on three green phosphor monitors. Every single performance of SYNCHROPATH is programmed as a unique event caracterized by the continous updates from the live set.

Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti - A mistaken Wedding ”This Nicolas Amato-directed clip for the psych pop collagist’s “Round And Round” b-side appeared online briefly last month only to be yanked before we could post it. Part traditional Jewish wedding, part karaoke performance, it’s not that strange by Pink standards, but worth a watch.”
